Tooth Decay, Tooth Ache, Bad Breath, etc. are some of the common dental issues we suffer from. How do these issues emerge? Looking back in the past, some of our daily habits and not taking proper care of our mouth can be the problem. What to do in such case, How to prevent them? There is a solution!! Preventive Dentistry – the practice of caring for your teeth before they get decayed or pyorrhea. It means this helps to avoid cavities, gum diseases enamel wear, etc.
There are mainly two forms of preventive dentistry one is home care like brushing, flossing & balanced diet. Another form of preventive dentistry is to fill the susceptible area of the tooth with pit & fissure sealants generally cavities start from fissures of tooth surface & contacts between two teeth, so it is wise to fill pit & fissures if someone is prone to curies. Regular cleaning of teeth once yearly is also good for healthy gums which helps to prevent Gingivitis & Pyorrhea.
Dental Hygiene Care
We recommend routine cleaning once a year. During a routine cleaning, we will scale and polish your teeth, take necessary x-rays and provide oral hygiene instructions.
We will remove plaque from your teeth during cleaning. Plaque is a biofilm of bacteria that forms on your teeth and gums after eating foods that produce toxins.
If we do not remove plaque for an extended period of time, the tooth starts to decay which can lead to cavities. Acid is produced when sugars in food react with bacteria present in the dental plaque on the tooth surface. The acid produced leads to a loss of calcium and phosphate from the enamel which is called dental caries and thus dental caries starts.
Plaque can also lead to gum irritation, soreness, and redness at the neck of the teeth. Sometimes gums may begin to bleed. This process can often cause gums to pull away from teeth. The biofilm (plaque) can also form pockets around tooth structures that eventually destroy the bone beneath the tooth. This is why it is important to clean the teeth on a regular basis.
1. How do I prevent cavities?
Routine checkups at a period of every six months and updated X-rays to detect problems early and cleanings with a dentist are the best things we can offer for prevention and early detection. We will demonstrate proper brushing technique, we discuss decay-causing foods to avoid and how to keep your mouth healthy.
2. Why are my teeth sensitive?
Some common causes for sensitivity include cavities, loss of enamel layer because of betel nut chewing or cracked teeth, faulty brushing technique or occasionally recent gum recession fillings and crowns.
3. Do I need X-rays?
Not every time you come in when needed though. There is much to see under the gums, under the bone, underneath old crowns, restorations, and fillings.
